Background

The Entrepreneurship Cell at IIT Kharagpur has played a pioneering role in advancing India’s startup ecosystem. Through its flagship initiative, the Entrepreneurship Awareness Drive, the institute connects early-stage founders with mentors, frameworks, and real-world insights.

For the Gurgaon edition, the objective was clear: offer early-stage startups a practical, experience-led session on navigating product-market fit - a stage where most ventures stumble. Recognizing Nonlinear’s work with early founders, innovation ecosystems, and lean methodology, IIT Kharagpur invited Nonlinear to lead this critical session.

How Nonlinear Added Value

Nonlinear transformed the session from a passive keynote into a founder-first, workshop-style experience  -  tailored to the real questions, failures, and aspirations of early-stage entrepreneurs. The session began by debunking the “build-first” myth, showing how premature scaling often leads to failure. Through pivot stories like Shopify, Slack, and Twitter, founders saw how customer feedback can completely reshape business direction and strategy.

The Measure - Learn - Build loop was broken down into clear, repeatable steps that helped founders build hypotheses, design lean experiments, and capture structured feedback  -  all without the need for heavy investment or development effort. A live Validation Board exercise guided teams in identifying their riskiest assumptions and designing lightweight, testable experiments, giving them a tool to validate fast, fail smart, and pivot with confidence.

Throughout the session, real-time strategic prompts challenged participants to think deeper: What job is your customer really hiring you for? What’s your unique story or unfair advantage? How many pivots can you afford  -  and where should you place your bets?
